Uma & baby
in the water

Here is Uma and her baby. Baby never got very far from her momma. He/she would usually be underwater, and right next to (or even under) Uma. This can make it a challenge to get pictures of Baby :-)

Uma was very active, swimming all around her pond area. This created a challenge for Baby to keep up. There was a good-sized crowd around the hippos most of the day. I was wearing my "Donna Turns 50" t-shirt, and was proselytizing about hippos--and handing out cards--to anyone who exhibited even the slightest interest in the hippos (and a few who didn't :-). I kept moving around to different areas, taking pictures and talking hippo talk with anyone who would listen. I think it's safe to say that any visitor that hung around the hippo area for more than a minute or two knew me.

At one point, I called out Uma's name, and she came over! She then popped up out of the water, and gave me a huge gaping grin. The people around the hippo pond actually applauded me for getting her to do this (like I really had something to do with it). Here are some pics...

The keepers were now ready to feed Uma and Baby. They put Tumbo inside the hippo house, and washed down the outside pen area (reminded me of Patti's job!). Then they opened the gate at the top of the ramp, and let Uma & baby up.....
